چکیده

Journal of Plant Registrations, Vol. 3, No. 1, January 2009 99 Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is a warm-season, perennial bunchgrass that is native to North America. Historically, it has been used as a forage and conservation grass, but more recently, the grass has received considerable attention as a bioenergy crop for the production of cellulosic ethanol (Vogel, 2004). Because of its potential as a renewable biofuels crop, interest in the grass is increasing and the land area being planted to switchgrass is expanding. However, establishment of desirable stands can be a problem because post-harvest seed dormancy causes low germination and slow seedling development (Beckman et al., 1993; Breeding for Reduced Post-Harvest Seed Dormancy in Switchgrass: Registration of TEM-LoDorm Switchgrass Germplasm

Assessment of drought tolerance of 49 switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) genotypes using physiological and morphological parameters

BACKGROUND Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is a warm-season C4 grass that is a target lignocellulosic biofuel species. In many regions, drought stress is one of the major limiting factors for switchgrass growth. The objective of this study was to evaluate the drought tolerance of 49 switchgrass genotypes. The relative drought stress tolerance was determined based on a set of parameters includ...

Contrasting Metabolism in Perenniating Structures of Upland and Lowland Switchgrass Plants Late in the Growing Season

BACKGROUND Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is being developed as a bioenergy crop for many temperate regions of the world. One way to increase biomass yields is to move southern adapted lowland cultivars to more northern latitudes. However, many southerly adapted switchgrass germplasm can suffer significant winter kill in northerly climes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Here, we have applied next-ge...

Carbohydrate and lignin partitioning in switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) biomass as a bioenergy feedstock

Approaching switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) as a multifunctional energy plant, it is important to comprehensively study the composition and partitioning of organic substances in the biomass. The character of carbohydrates and lignin concentration variation was assessed in switchgrass biomass cut at two maturity stages (heading and seed filling) in the first and second harvest years. Quality c...

Switchgrass Germplasm Resources

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is an important native grass and dominant member of the tallgrass prairie ecosystem. It is used for conservation, restoration, livestock feed production, and bioenergy feedstock production. The purpose of this review is to describe the biological and geographical basis for switchgrass germplasm diversity and to provide a resource for scientists and outreach per...

Chapter 2 Switchgrass Breeding , Genetics , and Genomics

Switchgrass was one of the dominant species of the North American tallgrass prairie and savanna ecosystems that once dominated a large portion of the continent. It is currently used for pasture, hay production, soil conservation, and biomass production for conversion to energy. Switchgrass was selected in 1992 as the herbaceous model species to develop dedicated cellulosic bioenergy crops. Bree...
